I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go straight to the main shutoff valve for your home. If you are unable to find the water valve to turn off, then you could try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the home to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give us a call, whatever the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to resolve the problem.

While you wait for our plumber to arrive, begin mopping up any water, put a container to catch drips, and remove important things from the affected area. If the house water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
