I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the water to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main shutoff valve for your property. If you’re unable to locate the tap to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any time day or night. We’ll be at your place as soon as we can to save the day.

While waiting, remove any significant items from the area, and clean up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves also.
