I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have isolating valves that you can turn off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating valve below or beside the cistern. If you cannot find a tap, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains isolating tap to stop all the water to your home.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any hour of the day or night. We’ll be at your place as soon as we can to resolve the problem.

While waiting, remove any important things close to the leak, and clean up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves as well.
