I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go immediately to the main valve for your home. If you are unable to locate a main valve to turn off, then you could try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

In the meantime, start cleaning up any water, position a container to catch any drips, and clear away significant items from the affected area. If the house water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.
