I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main valve for your property. If you are unable to locate the water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside your residence to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give us a call, no matter what the day or time is. We will be with you promptly to fix the leak.

While waiting, clear away any important possessions from the area, and clean up any water or position a bucket to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves as well.
