I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest access point and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t find the water main valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any time of the day or night. We will be at your home as soon as possible to resolve the problem.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any important items from the area, and clean up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
